We arrived in Mitchell on Friday noon and booked into Major Mitchell Caravan Park for 3 days. We had to catch up on the washing and refill our water tanks. Due to the flooding the road bridge across the river has been severely damaged and at present there is no pedestrian access, so the caravan park runs a shuttle bus on the hour for any campers who want to go into town, then picks them up when they are ready to return. The river rose halfway up the caravan park and the foot bridge that went from the park to the spa pool was washed away. The first day was spent setting up and looking around and in the evening we went to the local Bowling Club for tea. It was very nice and only $10.00 per head for Chicken Kiev with all the vegetables you could eat. The caravan park reserves a table and about 28 went from the caravan park, so the small club was quite full. The second day was spent washing and a trip into town to do some shopping and went out to Neil Turner Weir (a free camp) to have a look. It was big and very nice, there were plenty of vans out there. We then went to have a look at Fishermans Rest another free camp, but this camp has been ruined by the floods with deep sand all over the campgrounds and nowhere to park any vans which is a shame as it was a very nice place beside the river.
In the evening the camp fire was lit in the caravan park and about 25 people brought their chairs up to sit around the fire when 2 older men arrived with their piano accordions. We all had a great sing along to many of the older songs.
The third day in the morning we went across to the spa pool. It draws hot water from the artesian basin and is lovely to sit and relax in after another cold morning. After lunch we returned to the pool for another dip then went to the pub for a drink.
The mornings have still been quite cold, but the days have been very warm and fine.
