KATHERINE TO DARWIN

We travelled along the Sturt Highway from Katherine to Darwin on Sunday.   It was interesting to see so many old WW2 airfields beside the highway .   These were all signposted and made you realise how many servicemen must have been in the area during the war.
We decided to stay at the Boomerang Caravan Park in Virginia, which is about 35 km south of Darwin.  The park is not too bad but we are squeezed in with just enough room to extend your annexe.  This seems unnecessary as the park is not full at this time of the year.
The first port of call when we had settled in was Cassurina because I desperately needed a haircut.   I was a real hairbear as I had not had a cut since leaving home.  We have explored around Darwin, shopped and have had a good rest.    We discovered the wave pool which is in the waterfront precinct of the city and went for a swim there.   It was quite different from the surf with the waves coming more frequently, but was great fun.    They run the waves for 20minute sessions with a 10 minute break between which you need to catch your breath.    We also went to Mindil Markets on Thursday night, walked around, had something to eat and then watched the sunset while sitting on the sand.
We also went to Palmerston market on Friday night as we were told that they had fresh fruit and veg.
We were disappointed as there fruit and veg was mainly asian.    Palmerston is a large town only about 8 km from us and appears to be quite new with large housing estates around it.    There is a large RAAF base just outside Darwin and also an army base so I guess these houses belong to a lot of military people.
We have met a lot of nice people here and there is a great  pool in the caravan park, so we have been having a swim each day to get some exercise and to cool off.
We are leaving tomorrow morning (Sunday) to go to Litchfield National Park.   We are hoping to stay at the campground at Wangi Falls for around a week.   Unfortunately there is no phone or internet available there, so will be off air for a while.

An unusual instrument at Mindil Market (sounds like a digeridoo)
